Mary Did You Know?

Each year these darkest days of the year around the Winter Solstice seem to draw us inward and invite reflection.

As we near Christmas we find ourselves thinking more deeply about our loved ones, how we want to be with them, gift them with our love. We contemplate our own lives too, and our changing world. If we are paying attention, we feel ourselves being drawn into realms of mystery and care and longing for peace and for love.  We long for a sense of silence and safety and “rightness”  about our lives and for and those we love.  We feel ourselves as part of a great unfolding, a changing world; and we wonder. . . what is our role?–the purpose for which we can say “Yes” to Life?

A young woman about 2000 years ago was invited to bring the promised One into the world.  She said “Yes” when she was asked to conceive and bring forth a Son who would save His people and be great. A very daunting invitation.  Mary believed what was hard to believe. And Mary was blessed because she believed that God would do what God promised. And God did!

Please listen to this powerful song as you gaze upon this image of Mary. Jordon Smith this year’s winner of the TV show The Voice, performed this song in the show’s finale.

Jesus says to us: “…whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…” (Jn. 14:12).  This is hard for us to believe.  It’s hard to believe that we have found favor with God.  But can we believe that God will do what God promised to do in us, that God will fulfill the promise planted within each of us — that which God wants to bring forth into the world through us.

Peace, joy and love to all,
