Autumn Path

Looking out over the tree tops this morning I see these flaming colors in the foreground, with lots of tired greens beyond. This year the coming of Autumn feels like it has been long overdue.  I’ve been tired of the intensity of these recent months of conflict, chaos, suffering and disillusionment politically, nationally, globally.  There is a felt need to “just stop”,  to let go, to step back as nature does in her cycles and rhythms.  When the trees in autumn do that, they glow, become brilliant with the dynamics of some ancient wisdom that enables the Universe and all of creation to flourish!  That same Wisdom is in us as Earthlings  and is available to us, even necessary for us.Autumn Path

What if we humans were to recognize our present condition of confusion and distress of soul?  What if we were to follow our innate wisdom and just stop,  and “let go” of yesteryear’s habits of thought, our compulsions, projects and pressures, and our impulse to “try even harder” to make dysfunctional systems work?  Have we even noticed that their time has passed and that we are being destroyed by them?  What if, like the trees, we could pull back and let these structures go, and do so in a blaze of gratitude for how they once served us well but no longer do?  Perhaps our hearts would begin to glow with flaming colors of possibility that would  free us to follow the ancient wisdom that is stirring within us.

The wisdom needed to shape a path through our present wilderness, to create new systems and structures that will work for all, is already within each of us us and all of us, as the bud for spring’s new life is already present at the base of each autumn leaf.     Will we let go of  the old ways with hope and move into our winter, our quiet time, listening deeply, finding the vision,  embracing that unique Gift we were born give in service at this moment of Earth’s transformation? Will we allow ourselves to be quickened anew and allow what Holy Wisdom is longing to bring forth through us—“a brand new thing”?

18 “Forget the former things;

do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness. . .”

This is our moment!  We see it happening in the countless number of people who are able to drop the fearful focus on self and are living “for others”.  They come together to  care for those who are most needy and oppressed, to care for Earth, to grow healthy food, to create renewable energy systems, etc., and in so doing they are leading the way to a world that works for all.  They are doing this with great enthusiasm, and in many cases below the “radar screen”.  Let’s join them there and become an UPSTART SPRING together:

The human heart can go the lengths of God.

Dark and cold we may be but this

is no winter now. The frozen misery

Of centuries breaks, cracks, begin to move;

The thunder is the thunder of the floes.

The thaw, the flood, the upstart Spring.

Thank God our time is now when wrong

Comes up to face us everywhere,

Never to leave us til we take

The longest stride of soul folk ever took.

Affairs are now soul size.

The enterprise

Is exploration into God.

Where are you making for? It takes

So many thousand years to wake,

But will you wake for pity’s sake?
