Advent Reflection by Mary Southard, CSJ

Maria Walks (2)

WE ARE ALL PREGNANT . . . with everything that waits within us that waits to come forth, be released, and be given expression to the world.

Recently at a benefit Christmas concert, I was stirred as I heard a young woman sing these  words from a song I’d never heard before:

“I will be like Mother Mary with a blessing in my soul . . . with the future of world inside of me.” (Christmas Lullaby by Jason Robert Brown)

Why! That’s true for all of us, I thought.  There is a blessing in our souls, and the future of the world is inside of us! I feel how these darkest and shortest days nearing the Solstice do seem to sensitize us, to rouse our dreams and our felt need for a better way to live.  We feel more keenly the strength of our longing for light, for warmth, for love, for safety, for caring.  We find ourselves wanting the world to be a place where people get along, a place without war or violence, and where all are fed and have a chance.  That’s because we carry within us a dream–God’s Dream—for the unfolding of creation, of humanity and of our planet.  The dream is imbedded in our human genome and in our very souls . . . yours and mine.

Consider the following insight of Meister Eckhart  (1260-1328) and the meaning it has for us in our time:

“We are all meant to be mothers of God” he said. “What good is it to me if this eternal birth of the divine Son takes place unceasingly but does not take place within myself?  And, what good is it to me if Mary is full of grace if I am not also full of grace?

What good is it to me for the Creator to give birth to (the Son of God) if I also do not give birth to (Christ) in my time and my culture?”

Each of us is pregnant with “The Christ”, with God’s dream for creation.  Each of us is seeded with gifts and capacities to heal our world in this — the fullness of time — our time. As Meister Eckhart continues: “This, then, is the fullness of time  . . . when the Son of God (The Christ) is begotten in us.”  We carry this sacred Promise within us.

Each of us is a sacred promise pregnant with The Christ Becoming.

With peace and love,

Mary Southard, CSJ
